In Support of Sanctions Against the Isaias Regime

We Eritreans in the cyber community paltalk would like to express our wholehearted support, the UN Security Council to impose sanction on Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime.

Mr. President and members of the UN Security Council,

On behalf of our people who are living in terror and horror, we would like to convey our special appreciation and sincere gratitude to the African Union (AU) for requesting the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions against Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime, and to the U.N. Security Council for finally drafting a resolution in which we hope will be soon approved unanimously.

Excellencies,

Our wholehearted and unequivocal support to impose sanction on Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime is based on the following facts:

1. Ever since the UN sponsored Eritrean referendum for independence in 1993, Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime, has persecuted, tortured and arrested any individual or group of individuals: war disabled veterans, journalists, youth, elderly, parents, religious leaders, reformers, university students and more who were in any position to exercise their basic freedoms and civil liberties. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Committee to Protect Journalists, religious organizations and many other human rights organizations who have been documenting serious violations of a wide range of rights in Eritrea, including the right to freedom of expression, freedom of association, and freedom of religion.
2. Legally, the National Service in Eritrea supposed to last for a year and half. However, in reality, this National Service has no end; hundreds of thousands are still serving for years on hard slave labor camps in pretext of National Service and National Development Campaign. This has eroded the human resources, for instance, for Eritrean farmers and private businesses in the county. In addition, this endless military service and forced conscription have caused mass exodus of the youth from Eritrea to neighboring countries and much further beyond, since they don't see any future with the dictatorial regime except for forced slave labor camp or prison.
3. The UN World Food Program (WFP) considers over two-thirds of Eritreans need food assistance for survival, due to inadequate rainfall and mismanagement of farming land resource. Despite this fact, Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime is refusing to let the UN and other international humanitarian organizations to distribute food to the famine stricken people in country. As a result, today, it is estimated over 20% of young children suffer of acute malnutrition. In fact the malnutrition might be worst since no independent organization is monitoring it.
4. As Mr. Isaias Afewerki repeatedly and openly stated on the regime owned media, Eritrean farmers are not allowed to sell their harvests to anyone except to the local PFDJ shops. Furthermore, people are not allowed to transport flour or other food commodities from one part of to the country to another, even if it is for personal use. That means, if one happens to live far from his farming area, then one has to sell his crops in his farming locality and in turn buy the commodities from his residential locality at a higher price. In other words, today there is already a sanction imposed upon the Eritrean people by Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime.
5. Since food and medicine to the needy people are never part of sanctions of the UN, this would be the best gift the U.N. Security Council could give to the two-thirds of Eritreans in need of food assistance for survival. Especially, if the U.N. Security Council resolution make a clear demand for UN humanitarian provisions backed by Chapter 7 of the UN Charter.
6. Last but not least, as you are well aware for a long period of time Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime has been exporting its terrorist act that he has been experimenting on our people to our neighbors and far beyond. Unfortunately, to the people in the region, Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ dictatorial regime has found a fertile soil in Somalia and currently it is financing and training, Islamists insurgent groups such as Hizbul Islam and Al-Shabaab in Somalia to undermine the U.N.-backed transitional government lead by President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed.

We look forward to seeing the U.N. Security Council to approve sanctions resolution against Mr. Isaias Afewerki's PFDJ tyrannical regime as soon as possible.
