The arrival in Rome of the survivors of Lampedusa

"The arrival in Rome of the first survivors of the shipwreck of Lampedusa, forty days after the tragedy that saw them as protagonists at the centre of the Mediterranean, it is good news that confirms the commitment taken at the time by mayor Ignazio Marino and councillor Ignazio Marino Rita Cutini; but by itself it is not sufficient to fulfill the duty of solidarity and acceptance that the entire national community must observe as regard those - and there are thousands - that flee wars and famine hoping to find in Europe better living conditions for themselves and their loved ones". This was declared by president of the Community of Sant'Egidio Marco Impagliazzo commenting on the arrival at Fiumicino of a first contingent of refugees.

"In recent weeks - he continued - the landings have continued with a frequency of desperation, and now not only Lampedusa, but the whole of Sicily is no longer able to accommodate all the migrants and asylum seekers: the situations of overcrowding in the reception centres are worrying. We know - concluded Impagliazzo - the availability of other mayors to welcome the migrants in their municipalities, and urge the relevant authorities to follow up the requests already received. We also ask the other mayors to do their part. Not allowing entry means not governing the phenomenon of immigration".
